It’s always interesting hosting overseas guests and hearing their perspective on Christmas time. Many find the change of climate (to Summer) an odd experience.
A Kiwi Christmas can be celebrated in many ways; a picnic at the beach in the lovely hot summer weather, to the traditional Turkey, ham, and roast vegetables with the Christmas pudding, but also Pavlova usually topped with seasonal strawberries.
Christmas Eve is usually a fairly low key affair, perhaps time spent with family and friends. Christmas Day is the day when presents are exchanged and opened and the Christmas meal shared. Boxing Day (26th December) brings the sales, but also a time when many people head off for their annual summer family holidays at the beach.
The Pohutukawa tree (Metrosideros excelsa – sometimes also called the Kiwi Christmas tree) has crimson blooms which look particularly lovely on our New Zealand coastlines at Christmas time. There are also numerous Summer festivals to be enjoyed.
